The Lagos State Government has appealed to residents to take greater responsibility in preventing flooding by supporting ongoing environmental and flood control initiatives across the state.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Wahab, said while the government continues to invest heavily in drainage desilting, canal maintenance, and other flood control infrastructure, the cooperation of residents remains critical to reducing the impact of flooding, particularly during the peak of the rainy season.

According to the commissioner, the growing effects of climate change are becoming increasingly evident across the globe, with coastal cities witnessing more frequent and intense rainfall events. He noted that Lagos, as a coastal megacity, is also experiencing these challenges and must continue to adapt through proactive planning and resilient infrastructure.

Wahab explained that the state government remains committed to building a flood-resilient Lagos through sustained investments in drainage expansion, regular desilting of canals and waterways, strict enforcement of environmental regulations, and continuous engagement with communities to promote responsible environmental practices.

He emphasized that government interventions alone cannot eliminate flooding, urging residents to avoid indiscriminate waste disposal, refrain from blocking drainage channels, and cooperate with environmental officials in maintaining clean and functional waterways.

The commissioner further advised motorists to exercise caution during periods of heavy rainfall by avoiding flooded roads, warning that driving through submerged streets could endanger lives, damage vehicles, and worsen traffic conditions.
