The Lagos State Government has addressed recent online reports claiming the revocation of all existing building permits in the state.
In an official statement, the government clarified that it has not revoked any building permits but has instead introduced a three-month amnesty window for property owners.
The amnesty period, which runs from May 2 to July 30, 2024, allows property owners to obtain or perfect their planning permits without incurring the usual statutory penalties. This initiative aims to encourage compliance and proper documentation among property owners in the state.
Oloye Olusegun, Director of Public Affairs at the Lagos State Building Control Agency, emphasized the need for this clarification in response to a misleading headline from an online news outlet.
“It should be noted that the issuance of a Planning Permit is the prerogative of the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority, LASPPPA, which is under the supervision of the Honourable Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development,” Olusegun stated.
He further explained that the revalidation process is intended to allow the agency to conduct a thorough audit and authentication of all professionals involved in building construction within Lagos State. This step is crucial for ensuring that construction projects meet safety and regulatory standards.
