The Lagos State Government has called for calm in response to flash flooding caused by torrential rainfall that has persisted throughout the state.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, issued a statement on Wednesday, urging residents to remain vigilant and adhere to safety precautions.
The state has been experiencing continuous heavy rainfall, with approximately nine hours of non-stop downpour recorded since the early hours of Wednesday. This follows a pattern of daily heavy rains over the past week, leading to a significant rise in the level of the Lagos lagoon.
Mr. Wahab noted that the flash floods have inundated several areas, including Iyana-Oworo, which connects to the Third Mainland Bridge, among other regions. He assured the public that these floodwaters are expected to recede once the rains subside and the lagoon’s water level decreases.
To mitigate the impact, the state government has deployed officials from the Emergency Flood Abatement Gang to critical areas, including Iyana-Oworo, where they have worked to clear blockages and improve water flow.
The commissioner emphasized the importance of relocating from low-lying areas during this period to protect lives and properties. “We urge all residents in vulnerable zones to move to higher grounds as a precautionary measure,” he said.
Mr. Wahab also advised against wading through floodwaters with vehicles, highlighting the danger posed by even a foot of moving water, which can easily sweep away vehicles regardless of their size or the number of occupants.
Residents were encouraged to stay informed by regularly checking daily weather reports issued by the State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources. These reports are crucial for planning daily activities and ensuring personal safety.
“Lagos is a coastal city, with nearly one-third of its landmass situated below sea level,” Mr. Wahab noted. “This geographic reality necessitates a high level of environmental awareness and responsiveness from all residents.”
