The Lagos State Government has announced plans to construct 100 new public toilets across the state as part of its initiative to address the growing issue of open defecation. This decision was revealed by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, during the commemoration of World Toilet Day 2024, themed “Use the Toilet and Have Peace”.
The primary goal of this initiative is to provide accessible sanitation facilities in every Local Government and Local Council Development Area in Lagos, thereby promoting public health and hygiene.
The construction of these toilets is expected to significantly reduce the spread of diseases associated with poor sanitation, such as cholera and diarrhea. The government aims to create a cleaner and healthier environment for all residents.
The initiative is part of a broader strategy that includes advocacy, infrastructure development, and community engagement to eliminate open defecation in Lagos. The government has already launched the “Clean Nigeria, Use the Toilet Campaign” in several local areas and trained public toilet operators to ensure effective management of these facilities.
The need for additional public toilets has become increasingly urgent due to the rapid population growth in Lagos, which has led to a rise in open defecation practices.
This initiative reflects the Lagos State Government’s commitment to improving sanitation and public health, aiming for a future where open defecation is eradicated and every resident has access to proper toilet facilities.
