The Lagos State Governor Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu has accepted responsibility for yesterday’s traffic gridlock which grounded commercial activities in Lagos, but attributed it to inadequate communication before the closure of the independence bridge for the needed repairs.
The governor who paid an unscheduled on-the-spot visit to the independence bridge this morning, however regretted the inconveniences caused due to the closure.
Although the federal ministry of works through the office of the minister of works, Senator Dave Umahi, ordered the reopening of the bridge last night after a public outcry from road users, Sanwo-Olu said it was as a result of the rush to resume from the Eid-El-Fitr holidays that escalated the traffic gridlock.
The governor explained that “the repairs had already started before the announcement for the closure was made”.
According to governor Sanwo-Olu Olu:
“Communication is a continuous thing which the ministry of works should have done to enable Lagosians think ahead and plan for alternatives routs”.
Sanwo-Olu however adviced Lagosians to cultivate the culture of working remotely to avoid a reoccurrence of such traffic gridlock.
The governor also appealed to Lagosians to stop driving against traffic saying one-way driving was partly responsible for the gridlock.
Our correspondent reports that the minister of works Senator Dave Umahi will also be visiting the independence bridge later today for further assessment before the next step is taken.
