The Lagos State House of Assembly has reaffirmed its support for the establishment of state police, urging the 36 State Houses of Assembly to fast-track the passage of the constitutional amendment needed to implement the reform.

While addressing the House, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa described state police as the most practical solution to Nigeria’s growing security challenges, including kidnapping, banditry, and other violent crimes. He also commended President Bola Tinubu, the National Assembly, and other stakeholders for advancing the state police initiative.

Obasa said the proposed law should guarantee full operational and administrative autonomy for state police commands. He stressed that federal government intervention should be limited to matters affecting national security and clearly defined by law.

The Speaker also said state governments should have the constitutional power to recruit, screen, and appoint police personnel best suited to protect their communities. He further recommended that the appointment of Area Commanders, Zonal Commanders, and other senior officers should be confirmed by their respective State Houses of Assembly.

Responding to concerns that governors could misuse state police, Obasa argued that similar concerns have existed about the Nigeria Police Force under federal control. He urged stakeholders not to allow such fears to delay the reform, insisting that improving security and protecting lives and property should remain the priority.
