Kenyan Opposition Leader Accuses President of Defying Court Ruling on Haiti Police Deployment

Kenyan opposition leader Ekuru Aukot has accused President William Ruto of planning to defy a court ruling against the deployment of police to Haiti.

Aukot, who successfully challenged the planned deployment in court, argued that the president can only deploy the army, not the police, according to the court’s ruling.

Last November, the Kenyan parliament ratified the deployment of 1,000 officers to lead a multinational force in Haiti, where gangs are seeking to expand their territorial control.

However, a judge recently declared the mission illegal, stating that the National Security Council, led by the president, does not have the authority to deploy regular police outside the country.

The court ruled that military, not police, can be deployed for peacekeeping missions, and a reciprocal agreement with Haiti must be in place before the deployment.
