Katsina Council Approves ₦500m to Tackle Acute Malnutrition

The Katsina Executive Council approved ₦500 million for nutrition commodities to treat children suffering from acute malnutrition.

The approval was granted during the Council’s 15th Regular Meeting presided over by Governor Dikko Umar Radda.

The funding, which is for the 2026 nutrition programme, is expected to strengthen the state’s capacity to maintain a steady supply of essential nutrition commodities for children affected by severe and acute malnutrition.

The Commissioner for Health, Musa Adamu, said the intervention would help ensure the continued availability of life-saving nutrition supplies while reinforcing the government’s efforts to address malnutrition among vulnerable children.

Beyond healthcare, the Executive Council approved a series of measures targeting vulnerable households and communities affected by economic hardship.

Among the approvals is the procurement of 95,000 bags of assorted grains for distribution to vulnerable residents across the state.

The Council also approved the provision of cash and non-food assistance to widows, orphans, persons living with disabilities and other less privileged members of society as part of efforts to cushion the impact of rising economic pressures.

The state government also approved the modernisation of key markets in Dandume, Daura, Mashi and Jibia.

The market projects are aimed at improving trading environments, supporting local commerce and creating better conditions for economic activity in the affected communities.

In the religious and community development sector, the Council approved the rehabilitation of 81 Jumu’at Mosques spread across Katsina State’s 34 local government areas.

The meeting also approved the establishment of the Katsina State Model United Nations Organisation, known as MUNDO.

The initiative is designed to expose young people to leadership, diplomacy, international relations and public policy while providing a platform for them to develop skills relevant to civic participation and leadership.

The Executive Council further endorsed new coordination and accountability frameworks for the World Bank-supported HOPE-GOV, HOPE-PHC and HOPE-EDU programmes.

According to the state government, the frameworks are intended to strengthen coordination among implementing institutions, improve transparency and accountability, and ensure that the programmes deliver their intended development outcomes.

The multiple approvals cover healthcare, food security, social protection, infrastructure, youth development and governance.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Kaula Mohammed, the administration said the decisions demonstrate its commitment to addressing immediate social challenges while investing in initiatives expected to improve the long-term welfare and economic prospects of residents.
