US President Joe Biden made his long-awaited debut on TikTok on Sunday, sharing a 26-second video that touched on various light-hearted topics, including politics and the NFL championship game.
The move comes despite previous criticisms of the video-sharing platform by both Republicans and the Biden administration itself.
In his first TikTok video posted on the @bidenhq campaign account, the 81-year-old president humorously addressed questions about his preferences regarding the Super Bowl and the half-time show headlined by singer Usher.
When asked if there was a secret plot to rig the game for pop star Taylor Swift, who is dating Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce, to endorse Biden, the president jokingly played along with the unfounded conspiracy theory.
“I’d get in trouble if I told you,” he says.
However, despite Biden’s foray into TikTok, security concerns have led several states and the federal government to ban the app on official government devices. In Montana, a state-level attempt to ban TikTok was recently halted by a judge.
While TikTok remains under scrutiny, there are no immediate plans for further federal action to restrict its use.
The president’s debut video ended with him expressing his preference over his Republican rival, Donald Trump, in his trademark light-hearted manner.
“Are you kidding?” he laughs. “Biden.”
