The FIGC has pulled its support for FIFA president Gianni Infantino after his abandoned plan to sell stakes in the World Cup sparked opposition across European football.

FIGC announced the decision on Wednesday, saying it wanted to make its position clear on Infantino’s recent plans for the governance and future development of international competitions.

The Italian federation said it supports a football model built around dialogue, consultation, shared responsibility, sporting merit, solidarity and sustainability, with fans playing a central role.

The decision adds Italy to a growing list of European federations distancing themselves from Infantino as he prepares to seek re-election at next year’s FIFA Congress. England, Ireland and Wales have also withdrawn their support.

UEFA, European football’s governing body, has already threatened to boycott FIFA competitions amid the dispute.

Infantino became FIFA president in 2016, initially enjoying strong support from European football associations after replacing Sepp Blatter.

FIGC president Giovanni Malagò said Italy would continue working with UEFA and other European federations to promote a football system focused on merit, solidarity, sustainability and supporters.
