FIFA vice president Sandor Csanyi has withdrawn his backing for president Gianni Infantino, saying the organisation’s handling of former chief operating officer Kevin Lamour pushed him to break his silence.

Csanyi, who also heads the Hungarian Football Federation, told Infantino that he no longer had the confidence he once placed in his leadership.

In his letter, Csanyi highlighted several decisions linked to this year’s World Cup, including concerns about plans to hand some FIFA competitions to outside investors.

Csanyi described Lamour’s sudden removal as the “final straw”, arguing that the decision raised questions about FIFA’s leadership, professional judgement and ethical standards.

Lamour had recently criticised Infantino’s abandoned proposal to introduce private investment into World Cup-related projects, putting him at odds with senior FIFA officials.

Csanyi’s decision adds to the pressure on Infantino as questions grow over his leadership and FIFA’s direction.
