In response to appeals from political parties, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) in Edo State by an additional three days.
The collection period will now span from Friday, September 13, to Sunday, September 15, 2024.
The announcement was made by Sam Olumekun, INEC’s spokesman, who noted that the decision followed the demand for an extension during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Victor Uwaifo Event Centre in Benin City, the Edo State capital. The meeting, which brought together candidates, party leaders, and other stakeholders involved in the Edo State governorship election, resulted in a unanimous request for additional time for voters to collect their PVCs.
“Consequently, a three-day extension has been granted from Friday 13th – Sunday 15th September 2024. The cards will be available for collection in our 18 Local Government offices across the State from 9am to 5pm daily,” Olumekun stated in the official release.
The extension aims to ensure that as many eligible voters as possible can collect their PVCs before the governorship elections. INEC is urging all registered voters in the state who have not yet picked up their cards to take advantage of the additional time.
Political leaders and candidates present at the stakeholders’ meeting praised INEC for considering the request, noting that many voters were struggling to obtain their PVCs before the initial deadline.
The extension is seen as a vital step in promoting electoral participation and inclusivity, ensuring that no eligible voter is disenfranchised due to logistical challenges.
INEC has reiterated its commitment to conducting a free, fair, and credible election in Edo State, and the extension is part of the electoral body’s efforts to address concerns raised by various political actors.
