INEC Seeks Tough Security Measures Against Electoral Malpractices

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has urged security agencies to be alert to ballot snatchers, vote buyers and other electoral law violators ahead of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections and forthcoming polls across the country.

Amupitan who gave the charge today (Friday) in Abuja at the first regular meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES), said effective enforcement and swift response to breaches were critical to safeguarding the electoral process.

Representing the National Security Adviser (NSA) and ICCES Co-Chair, Hassan Abdullahi said security agencies were mobilising resources to prevent any action capable of disrupting the electoral process.

Also speaking, the Commissioner of Police, Abayomi Shogunle, who represented the Inspector-General of Police, assured that the Nigeria Police Force would deploy massively for all elections and continue to provide security for INEC personnel, facilities and materials nationwide.

Amupitan however, urged political parties, candidates and supporters to conduct themselves peacefully, noting that the credibility of elections depended largely on the ability of security agencies to secure the process β€œfrom start to finish.”
