The Lagos State Government is set to introduce an electronic call-up (e-call up) system to manage the movement of trucks within the Lekki-Epe corridor, starting on September 23, 2024.
This was disclosed in a statement issued yesterday by the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi.
The statement, signed by Mrs. Bolanle Ogunlola, Deputy Director of Public Affairs in the Ministry of Transportation, emphasized that the new system represents a critical step in addressing the gridlock that has long plagued the Lekki-Epe axis, a major economic hub in the state.
According to Osiyemi, the e-call up system will regulate truck movements, particularly those accessing the Lekki Deep Seaport and other industries located within the corridor.
The system will cover the stretch from Eleko Junction to the Lekki Free Trade Zone, an area that has seen rapid industrial growth but faces severe traffic challenges due to the influx of heavy-duty vehicles.
“The commencement date was earlier extended at the request of stakeholders to allow for full compliance,” Osiyemi stated.
He explained that the delay was necessary to ensure that all parties involved were adequately prepared for the new system, which is expected to bring significant improvements in traffic management.
Osiyemi also highlighted that the e-call up system is part of broader plans by both the Lagos State and Federal Governments to expand road networks and establish an inter-modal transport system in the region. He noted that the initiative will streamline vehicular movement in one of Nigeria’s most critical economic zones, reducing delays and improving logistics for industries in the area.
In conclusion, Osiyemi urged all stakeholders, including truck operators and industrialists, to cooperate with the government in ensuring the smooth implementation of the e-call up system. He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to addressing the traffic challenges and improving the overall transport infrastructure within the Lekki-Epe corridor.
