The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has initiated an investigation into an incident involving the destruction of a Nigerian Standard Passport by a female traveler at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.
The incident, which was captured in a viral video, has sparked widespread attention and led to swift action by the authorities.
The woman, identified as Favour Igiebor, was seen in the video destroying what is said to be her husband’s passport. The reason behind her actions remains unclear, but the act has been deemed a serious violation of Nigerian law.
In a statement released on Monday, NIS spokesman Kenneth Udo confirmed that the service has formally identified Igiebor and has invited her for questioning as part of the investigation. The NIS emphasized that the destruction of a passport is a criminal offense under Nigerian law.
“The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has launched a formal investigation following the circulation of a video on social media, showing a female traveler destroying a Nigerian Standard Passport at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos,” the statement read.
Udo further explained that if the allegations against Igiebor are confirmed, her actions would constitute a breach of Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015 (as amended). The corresponding penalties for such a violation are outlined under Section 10(h) of the same Act.
