The newly sworn-in Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Olatunji Disu has said the Nigerian Police Force has been placed on high alert,
to import foreign religious or ideological conflicts into Nigeria.
The warning comes amid intelligence reports of a planned protest by the proscribed Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), also known as Shi’ites, in the Federal Capital Territory, over the middle-east crisis and killing of Iran’s Supreme leader, Ayatoullah Khoumenei.
Addressing newsmen after he was sworn-in at the Presidential Villa, Abuja today, IGP Disu emphasized that the police are adopting a proactive “intelligence-led” approach to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
Our Correspondent, Raliat Adenekan reports that the IGP Disu declared that the Police Force (NPF) is fully prepared to embrace the decentralization of policing in the country. He revealed that his first official act earlier today (Wednesday) was the inauguration of an eight-member committee on State Police —led by Professor of Police Studies, Olu Ogunsakin—tasked with drafting the NPF’s official position and operational framework for state police implementation.
On officers’ welfare, the new IGP pledged to prioritise motivation, noting that the job is dangerous and demanding.
