House Of Reps Advocates Free, Compulsory Education for Out-Of-School Girl Child

The House of Reps has expressed worry over the high number of out-of-school girls engaged in “drugs and other vices” across the country.

In a motion presented by Hon. Kafilat A. Ogbara, in commemoration of the 2023 International Day of the Girl Child, the lawmaker had noted that the last survey from UNICEF revealed that 18.5 million children are “out of school” – out of which 60% are girls; a factor which leaves them behind, across multiple dimensions.

In its resolution, the House of Reps urged the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), National Orientation Agency (NOA) and other Stakeholders to initiate ways of educating and sensitizing adolescent girls on “the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.”
