The French government has rejected allegations by Niger Republic’s military leader, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, that France and Nigeria are collaborating to undermine the West African nation.
In a statement issued by the Political Counsellor to the French Embassy in Nigeria, Mr. Bertrand de Seissan, the allegations were described as “groundless.”
“This allegation is groundless. This has never been discussed, nor even suggested by either France or Nigeria,” he said, dismissing the claims made by Gen. Tchiani.
The accusations stem from a broadcast by Gen. Tchiani on Christmas Day, where he alleged that France was working in collusion with Nigeria to set up a military base targeting Niger’s interests.
Additionally, he accused Nigeria of harboring the Lakurawa terrorist group with the intention of using it to destabilize his country.
In response, Nigeria’s Federal Government also rejected these claims, reaffirming its commitment to regional stability and peaceful coexistence with Niger.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, emphasized Nigeria’s adherence to constitutionally enshrined foreign policy principles, which include non-interference in the internal affairs of neighboring countries.
“Nigeria has consistently demonstrated its dedication to fostering peace and cooperation in the region,” Tuggar stated, adding that the allegations by Gen. Tchiani were unfounded and counterproductive to ongoing efforts at diplomacy.
The minister further underscored the importance of Nigeria’s strong ties with France, reiterating the country’s commitment to maintaining robust diplomatic relations while upholding the principles of mutual respect and sovereignty.
