Forty-seven inmates have escaped from the Kakata Central Prison in central Liberia, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Justice on Monday.
The ministry expressed its concern over the incident, stating that it is working closely with police and prison authorities to determine the cause of the security breach that allowed the detainees to flee.
The escape occurred over the weekend in Kakata, Margibi County, which is located east of the capital, Monrovia. In response, the national police force has deployed additional officers to assist in the search for the escaped inmates. While the ministry did not confirm if any of the prisoners had been recaptured, it assured the public that all necessary measures were being taken to ensure their recapture.
The Ministry of Justice also urged the escaped inmates to surrender themselves to authorities to avoid facing additional charges. It further warned the public against aiding the escapees, emphasizing that anyone found assisting them would face legal consequences.
