The Lagos State Government has taken swift action following a devastating fire that ravaged a section of the Idumota Market in the early hours of Tuesday.
The fire, which resulted in the collapse of two buildings and the destruction of goods worth millions of naira, has prompted authorities to suspend commercial activities in the Central part of the state.
The fire, whose cause is yet to be determined, spread rapidly, engulfing several areas including Dosumu, Nnamdi Azikwe, Moshalashi, Woro Pedro, Obanikoro, Ago Tawa, Idumagbo Avenue, Idumagbo, Ido-Oluwo, and Oju Olobun.
In response to the emergency, the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Central Business District, Bola Lawal, announced the suspension of commercial activities in the affected areas. Lawal emphasized the necessity of this measure to safeguard lives and maintain peace and order amidst the crisis.
“We cannot afford to risk the safety of residents and traders in the face of such a calamity,” stated Lawal during a press briefing. “Suspending commercial activities is essential to facilitate emergency response efforts and prevent any further tragedies.”
