The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), has issued an urgent advisory for residents living near riverbanks along the River Benue Basin to evacuate to safer areas.
This warning comes as increased rainfall has caused water levels in the River Benue to reach critical flooding levels.
In a statement released on Thursday, NIHSA Director General, Umar Mohammed, cautioned that the rising water levels pose a significant threat to communities along the riverbanks. He stressed the importance of taking immediate action to prevent loss of life and property.
Mohammed also extended the warning to those residing along the River Niger, highlighting that the management of the Kainji and Jebba Dams is actively working to control the flow of floodwaters. However, residents in these areas are advised to relocate to safer grounds as a precautionary measure.
He called for cooperation with emergency management agencies and emphasized the need for communities to build resilience against flooding in Nigeria.
“We must work together to reduce the impact of flooding in our country and ensure the safety of our people,” Mohammed urged, highlighting the role of collective efforts in mitigating the adverse effects of seasonal flooding.
