The Federal Government has initiated plans to repatriate Nigerians seeking refuge in neighbouring Cameroon, Chad, and Niger Republic. Ahmed Tijjani, the Federal Commissioner of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, revealed this development after a meeting with Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno in Maiduguri.
Tijjani stated that the government, in collaboration with the UN Agency for Refugees (UNHCR), is currently conducting the registration of refugees for voluntary evacuation. A tripartite meeting is scheduled to further discuss the evacuation of refugees from the mentioned countries. Additionally, the government has agreed to close the remaining Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in Maiduguri, with plans to return the displaced persons to their ancestral homes promptly. Tijjani commended the commitment of the Borno state government to the welfare of the people and assured continuous support from the commission.
To facilitate the resettlement process, the commission has established a resettlement city in Amarwa Village, Konduga Local Government Area of the state. This resettlement city includes provisions for schools, clinics, markets, a police outpost, skill acquisition centers, and other amenities for the
returnees.
