The Federal Government of Nigeria is collaborating with Vaccine Alliance, Gavi, to secure emergency vaccine donations in response to an anticipated surge in cholera outbreaks across the nation.
This partnership aims to ensure swift action and adequate vaccination to control the spread of the disease.
Dr. Sania Nishtar, the Chief Executive Officer of Gavi, expressed her concerns about the cholera situation in Nigeria through a post on her X handle, @SaniaNishtar, on Thursday.
She emphasized Gavi’s readiness to support Nigeria in managing the outbreak and mentioned the availability of emergency vaccine doses if required.
“Deeply concerned about the ongoing #cholera outbreak in Nigeria. @Gavi and partners are closely monitoring the cholera outbreak, and stand ready to support the government to quickly respond, including to request emergency vaccine doses where needed,” Dr. Nishtar tweeted. She further assured that the global cholera stockpile, funded by Gavi, is currently fully replenished and prepared to aid in containing outbreaks and protecting those at the highest risk.
In response to the escalating cholera cases, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) activated its Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) on Monday. Dr. Jide Idris, the Director General of NCDC, stated that the EOC would serve as the central hub for coordinating the nationwide response efforts.
“The EOC will support affected states, facilitate rapid communication, enhance data analysis, and streamline decision-making processes to address the cholera outbreak efficiently,” Dr. Idris said.
The activation of the EOC signifies the government’s proactive approach to managing the cholera crisis. The centre will provide critical support to the states most affected by the outbreak, ensuring a cohesive and efficient response to curb the spread of the disease.
