The Federal Government announced on Tuesday, June 25, that the Keffi Medium Security Custodial Centre will be among several facilities slated for relocation out of the country’s 256 custodial centers.
The decision comes as part of a broader initiative to address issues arising from urbanization.
The Keffi centre, established in 1820, is one of the many custodial facilities affected by the expansion of urban areas. The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, during an inspection of the Keffi facility.
The centre has recently undergone rehabilitation, including the construction of a new perimeter fence to enhance security.
In addition to visiting Keffi, Minister Tunji-Ojo also inspected the 3,000-capacity Karshi Custodial Centre in Abuja. He emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring maximum security within custodial centres across the country.
The Keffi Custodial Centre currently holds 750 inmates, despite having a capacity for only 340 inmates. Out of these 750 inmates, 605 are awaiting trial.
The overcrowding issue highlights the urgent need for the planned relocations and improvements.
