The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has announced the federal government’s ambitious plan to boost electricity generation from the current 4,000 megawatts to 6,000 megawatts by the end of 2024.
This declaration was made during a meeting with members of the Senate committee on power held in Abuja on Monday.
Adelabu outlined the strategy to achieve this target, emphasizing the utilization of hydro and solar power plants to augment the existing power infrastructure. He highlighted the importance of increasing electricity supply to households and businesses to stimulate economic growth and improve living standards.
Expressing concern over the current state of affairs, Adelabu lamented that the highest level of electricity generation thus far stands at only 5,800 megawatts, labeling it as an “unfortunate and sad situation.” He stressed the urgent need for improvement to meet the growing demands of the population.
Furthermore, the minister emphasized the government’s commitment to transforming the Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos), which play a crucial role in the last mile of the power supply chain.
Adelabu emphasized that the performance of DisCos directly impacts the overall effectiveness of the power sector. He warned that underperformance by DisCos would reflect poorly on the entire industry’s performance.
