FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OFFICIALLY DECLARES INDEPENDENCE BRIDGE OPEN

By Godfrey Gabriel

The federal government has officially declared opened the independence bridge following completion of temporary repairs.

At the formalities held this afternoon, the minister of works, senator Dave Umahi insists that action will be taken against the Lagos Controller of works, Engineer Olukorode Kesha for her failure to work according to instructions and causing Lagosians avoidable pains.

The minister had repeatedly said Engineer Olukorode Kesha was responsible for the recent historic traffic congestion in the heart of Lagos, stressing there’s need for discipline to serve as deterrence to other controllers.

Umahi emphasized that the ministry will set a standard procedure for road and bridge closure for all controllers to adhere to, going forward.

The minister revealed that the permanent repair of the defective portion has been redesigned for a permanent solution.

According to Senator Umahi,”the fault of the bridge is similar to that of the third Mainland Bridge bridge, Carter bridge, amongst other bridges currently receiving government attention“.

Umahi also added that in the next phase of repairs, “the ministry of works, will be working in collaboration with the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to effectively manage traffic when the bridge is eventually closed.
