Former Vice President of the World Bank, Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili, has called for greater transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement, she urged politicians to take responsibility for their actions as political activities begin to gather momentum.
Ezekwesili criticized the National Assembly for passing what she described as an unpopular electoral bill despite protests from stakeholders.
She alleged that the move amounts to a constitutional coup and undermines citizens’ trust in the democratic process.
The former minister also condemned the reported use of security operatives to disperse peaceful protesters at the National Assembly complex.
She expressed concern over the swift assent to the bill by President Bola Tinubu within 24 hours of its passage.
Ezekwesili stressed that Nigerians are demanding mandatory real-time electronic transmission of election results to ensure credibility.
According to her, electoral transparency is a fundamental requirement for legitimacy in public office.
She warned that political leaders would bear responsibility for any consequences arising from citizens’ dissatisfaction.
Ezekwesili urged Nigerians to remain vigilant, insisting that the struggle for credible elections is far from over.
