Enyimba Crashes Out of 2024/2025 CAF Confederation Cup After Defeat to Zamalek

Enyimba International FC of Aba has been eliminated from the 2024/2025 CAF Confederation Cup following a 3-1 defeat to Zamalek SC of Egypt in their final Group F match on Sunday.

The loss, played at the Cairo International Stadium, confirmed Enyimba’s third-place finish in the group, with only five points from six games.

The Peoples’ Elephant, coached by Stanley Eguma, came into the match with slim hopes of advancing to the knockout stage but needed a victory to stay in contention.

However, Zamalek, already in commanding form throughout the group stage, delivered a dominant performance to secure top spot in Group F with 14 points, cementing their credentials as title contenders.

Enyimba’s performance in the group stage was marred by inconsistency. The team managed only one win, two draws, and three losses, collecting five points out of a possible 18. Their elimination was effectively sealed after a disappointing 1-1 home draw against Al Masry in their penultimate game, a result that left them in a precarious position heading into their clash with Zamalek.

Zamalek opened the scoring early in the match, capitalizing on defensive lapses from the Nigerian side. Although Enyimba managed to pull one goal back, their efforts to find an equalizer were stifled by Zamalek’s solid defensive organization and clinical counterattacks. The Egyptian side added two more goals to round off an emphatic victory in front of their home fans.

The defeat marks a disappointing end to Enyimba’s continental campaign, as the two-time CAF Champions League winners were unable to replicate their historic successes on the Confederation Cup stage. The team struggled to find consistency in attack and defense throughout the group phase, with their only win coming against AS Kigali of Rwanda.

For Zamalek, the victory reinforced their dominance in Group F, as they finished unbeaten with four wins and two draws. They now advance to the knockout rounds with momentum, aiming to add another continental trophy to their illustrious history.
