Egypt manager Hossam Hassan has dismissed speculation of a rift with captain Mohamed Salah, saying the forward’s departure from the national team camp ahead of their second AFCON 2027 qualifier was a planned decision to protect his fitness.
Salah’s absence from Egypt’s upcoming match against South Sudan had raised questions about tensions within the squad, particularly after he was substituted in the 61st minute of their encounter with Angola.
However, Hassan said the decision had been agreed with Salah before the Angola match, stressing that the player remained central to his plans.
The manager explained that Salah had expressed concerns about playing on artificial turf and that resting him was considered necessary to reduce the risk of injury.
Hassan described the forward as an influential and essential member of the national team, adding that his priority was ensuring the fitness and safety of his players ahead of future fixtures.
Egypt will now face South Sudan without their captain as they continue their campaign to qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
Hassan also addressed recent controversial comments involving Al Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy during his press conference, seeking to clarify another issue surrounding the national team.
