Edo Queens Fall to TP Mazembe in CAF Women’s Champions League Semifinal

Edo Queens’ quest for glory in the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League came to an end as they suffered a 3-1 defeat to TP Mazembe in the semifinals held at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca, Morocco. The match took place on Tuesday, marking a significant moment in the tournament for the Nigerian champions.

Edo Queens took the lead in the 65th minute with a brilliant lob from Emem Essien, who scored her third goal of the tournament. However, the lead was short-lived.

TP Mazembe equalized late in the match when Merveille Nanguji scored with a header from a corner kick, bringing the score to 1-1 just before the end of regulation time.

The match turned in favor of TP Mazembe during extra time. In the 101st minute, Comfort Folorunso of Edo Queens inadvertently scored an own goal, putting TP Mazembe ahead 2-1. Marlene Yav Kasaj then sealed the victory with a penalty, making it 3-1

Despite the loss, Edo Queens aim to secure a third-place finish in the tournament, which would earn them $350,000 in participation fees. They will face Masr in the third-place match, hoping to emulate the success of Bayelsa Queens, who previously finished third in the 2022 edition of the tournament.

Edo Queens’ performance in the tournament has been commendable, especially their victory over the defending champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, which showcased their potential on the continental stage.
