The Department of State Services (DSS) has granted administrative bail to Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), following his arrest earlier on Monday.
Pro-democracy activist and African Action Congress presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, announced Ajaero’s release via a tweet on Monday night. Sowore referred to the current administration as a “fascist regime” and confirmed that Ajaero had been released from DSS custody on bail.
Ajaero was arrested on Monday morning at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja while en route to the United Kingdom for an official engagement. His detention sparked outrage from various civil society groups, organizations, activists, and prominent individuals, who condemned the arrest and demanded his immediate release.
The Nigeria Labour Congress itself strongly criticized the arrest, with the NLC’s National Administrative Council, led by Deputy President Adeyanju Adewale, issuing a statement on Monday evening.
The council described Ajaero’s detention as “brazen and illegal,” calling it a violation of workers’ rights and democratic principles. The NLC called for his immediate and unconditional release, further escalating the public outcry surrounding the incident.
