On Monday, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Plateau State organized a ‘Plateau Peace Walk’
rally to express its displeasure over the continuous killings in the state and other parts of the country.
Led by the CAN chairman in the state, Rev Polycarp Lubo, and joined by prominent Christian leaders, the
rally aimed to address the recent surge in violence.
Plateau State has recently witnessed blood-thirsty attacks, with over 200 casualties during Christmas
Eve attacks in the Bokkos and Barkin Ladi local government areas.
The coordinated killings prompted local and international outrage, leading to Governor Caleb Mutfwang
criticizing the military for a tardy response and describing the incidents as carnage. The United Nations
urged the Federal Government to conduct a thorough probe into the attacks, affecting over 50 villages.
Vice President Kashim Shettima visited the affected communities, and the Federal Government
promised to address the menacing trend of blood-spilling marauders.
However, there have been renewed calls for citizens to bear arms for self-defense. Chief of Army Staff,
Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, believes the Nigerian Army can defend the country, warning that
allowing self-defense could lead to anarchy.
