Controversial social media personality, Idris Olarewaju Okuneye, famously known as Bobrisky, has been handed a six-month jail term without the option of a fine by the Federal High Court in Lagos for abusing the naira currency.
The sentence, delivered by Justice Abimbola Awogboro, is aimed at serving as a deterrent to others who engage in similar acts of mutilating or abusing the national currency.
The judge emphasized the seriousness of the offense and stated that the punishment would commence from March 24, 2024, the day of Bobrisky’s arrest.
Bobrisky’s conviction stems from a charge brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), to which he pleaded guilty.
Despite his plea, the court found him culpable and postponed the sentencing to April 9, 2024, which coincided with a public holiday declared for the Eid-el-Fitr celebration.
In his plea for a lighter punishment, Bobrisky expressed his lack of awareness regarding the law pertaining to the abuse of the naira. He highlighted his status as a social media influencer with over five million followers, implying that his actions were not driven by malicious intent.
However, Justice Awogboro firmly asserted that ignorance of the law does not excuse one from its consequences.
