The Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) is gearing up for its 20th edition, set to take place in Lagos from October 25 to November 2, 2024.
The prestigious annual event, which celebrates outstanding achievements in African cinema, promises to be an exciting week of activities, culminating in the grand Awards Ceremony.
At a press briefing, AMAA’s Chief Operating Officer, Tony Anih, provided details about this year’s schedule, revealing that the event will kick off with a Coffee Book Launch. The celebrations will span eight days, with a variety of cultural and cinematic events aimed at spotlighting the best of African talent.
Leading the nominations this year is the film The Weekend, which has earned an impressive 16 nods. The film, already generating significant buzz in industry circles, has been nominated in major categories, including Best Film, Best Director, and Achievement in Cinematography. Its widespread recognition positions it as a frontrunner in what is shaping up to be a competitive awards season.
Hot on the heels of The Weekend is South Africa’s The Queenstown Kings, which received 15 nominations. Other notable films making waves in this year’s lineup include This is Lagos, Under The Hanging Tree, and Out of Breath, all of which have secured spots across multiple categories.
Nigerian filmmaker Femi Adebayo’s epic Jagun Jagun is also a strong contender, having secured seven nominations. Known for his ability to merge storytelling with cultural and historical themes, Adebayo’s work continues to resonate with both local and international audiences.
As one of the most respected and anticipated film award events in Africa, the AMAA continues to attract attention from filmmakers across the continent and the diaspora.
